Gojo’s awakened power against Toji is one of the most important turning points in Jujutsu Kaisen because it shows the moment Satoru Gojo stops being merely talented and becomes something closer to untouchable. Before this moment, Gojo is already recognized as a prodigy. He has the Six Eyes, the Limitless technique, overwhelming confidence, and the natural arrogance of someone who has rarely been truly challenged. But Toji Fushiguro changes that. Toji does not defeat Gojo through cursed energy, but through preparation, physical ability, timing, and a deep understanding of how sorcerers rely on their techniques.

The battle matters because Toji is the perfect counter to Gojo at that stage in his life. He has no cursed energy, which makes him difficult for sorcerers to sense. His Heavenly Restriction gives him superhuman physical power, speed, and perception. He also uses cursed tools with brutal intelligence, especially weapons designed to bypass or disrupt cursed techniques. Gojo’s Infinity, which usually keeps threats away from him, is not enough when Toji forces him into exhaustion and strikes at the perfect moment.

Gojo’s first defeat is shocking because it breaks the image of invincibility around him. He is not beaten by someone with greater cursed energy. He is beaten by someone who understands the gap in his defenses. Toji attacks when Gojo is tired, distracted, and overconfident. This defeat becomes the trigger for Gojo’s transformation. It pushes him beyond talent and into true mastery.

The key to Gojo’s awakening is his understanding of Reverse Cursed Technique. Before this point, Gojo understands cursed energy at an extraordinary level, but he has not fully grasped how to heal himself using positive energy. After being brought to the edge of death, his mind enters a state of extreme clarity. Instead of panic, he reaches a strange calm. This is the moment where Gojo begins to understand cursed energy not only as something destructive, but as something that can be reversed, repaired, and refined.

When Gojo returns, he is different. His presence is no longer just confident; it is almost detached. He has crossed a boundary that Toji did not expect him to survive. His awakening gives him access to a level of control that completely changes the fight. He can now use Reverse Cursed Technique to heal himself, keep his brain refreshed, and maintain his Limitless technique at a far higher level. This is the foundation of the Gojo who later becomes known as the strongest.

The most iconic expression of this awakening is Hollow Purple. Hollow Purple is created by combining the attraction of Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue with the repulsion of Cursed Technique Reversal: Red. Blue pulls space together, while Red pushes space away. When these two opposing forces are combined, they create an imaginary mass that erases anything in its path. Against Toji, this technique represents more than raw power. It represents Gojo’s new understanding of his own ability.

Toji realizes too late that the fight has changed. In their first encounter, he was hunting Gojo. In the second, Gojo has become something beyond Toji’s original calculation. Toji still has incredible instincts, skill, and physical strength, but Gojo’s awakened state places him on another level. The balance of the fight shifts from tactical assassination to overwhelming transcendence.

What makes this scene powerful is not just that Gojo wins. It is that he is reborn through defeat. Toji forces Gojo to confront death, and that confrontation unlocks the next stage of his power. Gojo does not awaken because he was always invincible. He awakens because, for the first time, he is truly vulnerable. That vulnerability becomes the doorway to his evolution.

This moment also shapes Gojo’s personality and philosophy. After surviving Toji, Gojo understands the lonely height of strength more clearly than ever. He becomes more aware of the broken structure of the jujutsu world and eventually develops a desire to raise strong students who can change it. His awakening is not only a power-up; it is the beginning of the person he becomes.

Toji’s role in the story is equally important. He is not just a villain or an obstacle. He is the force that reveals what Gojo really is. Without Toji’s brutality, planning, and impossible physical presence, Gojo may not have reached that level so soon. In a strange way, Toji becomes the catalyst for the strongest sorcerer’s true emergence.

Gojo’s awakened power against Toji stands out because it combines battle, character development, and symbolism. It is about the difference between talent and realization. Before the fight, Gojo is gifted. After the fight, he is awakened. He learns how to heal, how to reverse, how to combine, and how to stand at the center of his own power without hesitation.

That is why this scene remains one of Jujutsu Kaisen’s defining moments. It shows the birth of the modern Gojo: brilliant, terrifying, untouchable, and separated from others by the very strength that makes him extraordinary.
