One of the most common concerns about drinking water is whether consuming too much can “wash the salt out of your body.” While there is some truth behind the idea, it is often misunderstood. For most healthy people, drinking a reasonable amount of water does not cause sodium deficiency because the body has sophisticated systems that regulate both water and electrolytes.

Understanding how hydration and sodium work together provides a much clearer picture than myths or one-size-fits-all advice.

Healthy Kidneys Keep Water and Sodium in Balance

Your kidneys are responsible for maintaining the right balance of water and electrolytes, including sodium. Every day they filter large amounts of blood, adjusting how much water and sodium are retained or excreted to keep your body’s fluid levels stable.

For most healthy adults, drinking approximately 1,500 to 2,000 millilitres (1.5 to 2 litres) of plain water spread throughout the day is well within the kidneys’ normal ability to regulate. This amount does not normally dilute blood sodium to dangerous levels.

Rather than operating on a fixed water quota, the body constantly adjusts based on thirst, urine concentration, hormone levels, activity, and environmental conditions.

When Can Water Lower Sodium Levels?

Low blood sodium, known as hyponatremia, is uncommon in healthy people drinking normal amounts of water. It is more likely to occur when water intake greatly exceeds the body’s ability to eliminate it.

Examples include:

  • Drinking several litres of water within only a few hours.
  • Replacing heavy sweat losses during prolonged endurance exercise with only plain water.
  • Certain medical conditions or medications that interfere with the body’s water regulation.

In these situations, excessive water can dilute sodium faster than the kidneys can restore balance.

Can Water Alone Wash Salt Out of Your Body?

Not under normal circumstances.

If you eat a typical diet, sodium is continually replaced through foods and beverages. The kidneys remove excess sodium when intake is high and conserve sodium when intake is lower.

The amount of water required to significantly lower sodium levels is generally far greater than what most healthy people drink during an ordinary day.

What If Someone Never Eats Salt?

This changes the discussion.

If someone truly consumed virtually no sodium, then drinking water could eventually contribute to low blood sodium. However, the primary problem would be the lack of sodium intake, not the water itself.

Sodium is an essential nutrient. It is required for:

  • Nerve signalling.
  • Muscle contraction.
  • Maintaining blood volume.
  • Regulating fluid balance inside and outside cells.

Fortunately, even people who never add table salt usually consume some sodium naturally through foods such as:

  • Meat
  • Fish
  • Eggs
  • Dairy products
  • Vegetables
  • Grains

Completely eliminating sodium from the diet is difficult because nearly all foods contain at least small amounts.

What Happens If Sodium Intake Is Extremely Low?

If sodium intake remains extremely low for an extended period, symptoms may gradually develop, including:

  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Nausea
  • Headaches
  • Confusion

In severe cases, dangerously low blood sodium can lead to seizures, coma, or death.

Drinking large amounts of plain water during severe sodium deficiency could worsen the situation by diluting blood sodium even further.

Should Someone With Very Little Sodium Intake Add Salt to Water?

There is no scientific guideline recommending a certain number of pinches of salt per bottle of water.

For someone who eats very little sodium, simply adding salt to water without understanding the reason for the low-sodium diet is not recommended. People avoiding salt because of kidney disease, heart failure, liver disease, or certain medications may require individualized medical advice.

For an otherwise healthy person whose diet genuinely lacks sodium, replacing sodium through food is generally preferable to putting large amounts of salt into drinking water.

A Rough Reference for Salt

While not an official recommendation, a useful reference is:

  • One-quarter teaspoon of table salt contains about 575 milligrams of sodium.

The Adequate Intake established in North America is:

  • 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day for most adults.

Many organizations also recommend remaining below:

  • 2,300 milligrams per day unless medical circumstances require otherwise.

The body’s minimum physiological requirement is believed to be considerably lower, roughly 500 milligrams per day, although this amount leaves little margin for sweat losses or other sodium needs.

What About Adding One Pinch of Salt to 355 mL of Water?

Some people wonder whether adding a small pinch of salt to each glass of water is a reasonable solution.

As a rough estimate:

  • One small pinch of table salt weighs approximately 0.3 to 0.4 grams, providing roughly 120 to 160 milligrams of sodium.

If someone drank:

  • Four cups of 355 millilitres each (1.42 litres total), they would consume approximately 480 to 640 milligrams of sodium from the added salt.
  • Six cups (2.13 litres total) would provide approximately 720 to 960 milligrams of sodium.

Even six lightly salted cups would still provide less than the Adequate Intake of 1,500 milligrams per day, meaning additional sodium would normally come from foods.

Adding excessive salt to water is generally discouraged because it makes the water unpleasant to drink and is not the body’s preferred method of obtaining sodium.

Do You Need to Drink Plain Water?

Many people rarely drink plain water and still remain adequately hydrated.

Hydration comes from several sources, including:

  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Milk
  • Juice
  • Soft drinks
  • Water-rich foods such as fruits, vegetables, yogurt, and soups
  • Water naturally produced during metabolism, which contributes approximately 250 to 350 millilitres per day in many adults

If you consume beverages other than water and eat regular meals, you are still taking in water.

What Does the Science Actually Measure?

Scientists often study hydration by measuring water turnover, which represents all the water entering and leaving the body each day.

Using the gold-standard method known as doubly labelled water, large international studies have found that many adults have an average water turnover of approximately 2 to 3 litres per day.

Importantly, this figure refers to total water, not plain drinking water.

Total water includes:

  • Plain water
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Milk
  • Juice
  • Other beverages
  • Water contained in food
  • Metabolic water produced by the body

This is why there is no universal recommendation that everyone must drink a specific number of glasses of plain water each day.

How Much Water Does the Average Person Actually Need?

Science does not support a single daily amount of plain water that applies to everyone.

Water requirements vary depending on:

  • Body size
  • Physical activity
  • Climate
  • Humidity
  • Diet
  • Health conditions
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding

Some healthy people may drink almost no plain water because nearly all of their hydration comes from food and other beverages.

Others working outdoors in hot weather may require several litres of plain water in addition to the water they obtain from food.

The important measurement is total water intake, not plain water alone.

The Bottom Line

Healthy kidneys are extremely effective at regulating water and sodium balance. Drinking 1.5 to 2 litres of plain water throughout the day is generally well tolerated by healthy adults and is not enough to “wash the salt out of the body.”

The real risk of low sodium usually comes from drinking excessively large amounts of water in a short period, losing large quantities of sodium through sweat without replacing it, or consuming an extremely low-sodium diet.

Scientific evidence also shows there is no fixed requirement for plain water. Researchers measure total water intake, which includes beverages, food, and even water produced during metabolism. Many people who rarely drink plain water still meet their hydration needs through these combined sources.

Likewise, sodium should not be eliminated completely. Although the body may function on roughly 500 milligrams per day under ideal conditions, the commonly recommended Adequate Intake for healthy adults is 1,500 milligrams per day, with an upper limit of 2,300 milligrams per day for most people.

The healthiest approach is not to chase arbitrary water or salt targets, but to maintain a balanced diet, replace fluids according to thirst and activity, and allow the body’s natural regulatory systems to do the job they evolved to perform.
