Accuracy and evasion are battle-only stats that change a move’s chance to hit. The game starts with a move’s listed accuracy, then applies the attacker’s accuracy modifier and the target’s evasion modifier, along with any ability, item, or weather effects. The result is compared to a random check to decide hit or miss.

Stage system at a glance

Both accuracy and evasion use stages from −6 to +6. Each stage maps to a multiplier. Accuracy uses the table directly, evasion uses the same numbers but works against the attacker.

  • −6: 3⁄9
  • −5: 3⁄8
  • −4: 3⁄7
  • −3: 3⁄6 = 1⁄2
  • −2: 3⁄5
  • −1: 3⁄4
  • 0: 1
  • +1: 4⁄3
  • +2: 5⁄3
  • +3: 2
  • +4: 7⁄3
  • +5: 8⁄3
  • +6: 3

Final hit chance, in simplified form:

Final accuracy = Base accuracy × (Accuracy multiplier) ÷ (Evasion multiplier) × other modifiers

Common ways stages change

  • Lowers accuracy: Sand-Attack, Smokescreen, Flash, Kinesis
  • Raises evasion: Double Team, Minimize
  • Resets all stat changes: Haze
  • Passes current stages to a switch-in: Baton Pass

Abilities that matter in Emerald

  • Compoundeyes: raises the user’s move accuracy
  • Hustle: lowers the user’s accuracy for physical moves
  • Keen Eye: prevents the user’s accuracy from being lowered by foes
  • Clear Body: prevents the user’s stats, including accuracy and evasion, from being lowered by foes
  • Sand Veil: raises the user’s evasion in sandstorm

Items that matter in Emerald

  • BrightPowder: makes moves targeting the holder less accurate
  • Scope Lens, Razor Claw, etc. affect crits, not accuracy
  • White Herb: restores lowered stats once, which can clear an accuracy drop

Moves that ignore accuracy and evasion

Some moves bypass the accuracy-evasion check and simply hit if the target is not immune to the type and not unreachable that turn.

  • Always hit: Aerial Ace, Shock Wave, Swift, Magical Leaf, Faint Attack, Vital Throw
  • Guarantee next hit on a chosen target: Lock-On, Mind Reader

Weather and field notes

  • Sandstorm boosts evasion via Sand Veil only, it does not raise evasion for other Pokémon
  • Rain makes Thunder always hit its target
  • Sun makes Thunder very unreliable
  • Reflect and Light Screen do not affect accuracy, only damage after a hit

Edge cases and priorities

  • A move with 100 accuracy can miss after modifiers if your accuracy is lowered or the foe’s evasion is raised
  • A move with 70 accuracy can become reliable if you stack accuracy boosts and the foe has no evasion boosts
  • Accuracy and evasion changes apply before the random hit check each turn

Practical tips

  • If foes are using Double Team, clear the board with Haze or ignore the check with always-hit moves
  • In sand teams, pairing Sand Veil users with BrightPowder pushes more misses over long battles
  • Baton Pass chains can carry evasion boosts, so bring answers like Haze, Phase moves, or sure-hit moves
  • Keen Eye or Clear Body users are dependable against accuracy-dropping strategies

In Emerald, accuracy and evasion are simple multipliers layered on top of a move’s listed accuracy, yet their impact is large. Control the stage battle, bring a sure-hit option, and use abilities or items that tilt the check in your favor.
