Match Call is a mode inside the PokéNav that stores trainer contacts, lets them phone you with updates, and enables battle rematches that grow in difficulty. It turns the overworld into a rotating set of challenges so you can keep training after the first encounter.

How to unlock it

  • You receive the PokéNav early in the story. Match Call becomes truly valuable after you defeat the Pokémon League, because rematches expand and Gym Leaders become eligible.

Adding contacts

  • Most regular trainers add themselves to your list after your first battle with them.
  • To register Gym Leaders for rematches, become Champion, then speak to each leader in their gym to add them to Match Call.

How rematches trigger

  • As you explore, battle, and time passes in game, registered trainers may call you asking for a rematch.
  • You cannot force a rematch by phoning them, but calling can reveal their current message and location.
  • When a trainer invites you, go to their usual spot on the route or in the gym to battle again.

How rematches scale

  • Each rematch raises levels, improves move sets, and often adds held items.
  • Regular trainers climb gradually so they remain useful for leveling.
  • Gym Leaders scale more sharply, offering some of the toughest repeatable fights in the main region.

What you see in Match Call

  • A scrolling list of contacts with short status messages.
  • Calling a contact shows their flavor text and location, and if they want to battle again they will say so.
  • Some NPCs share tips, sales, or flavor updates, but the key value is tracking rematch invitations.

Why it matters

  • Efficient training: repeat battles against stronger teams without grinding only on wild Pokémon.
  • Post game depth: eight Gym Leaders become ongoing tests with upgraded lineups.
  • World reactivity: the phone calls make Hoenn feel alive, and your route choices naturally rotate as new invitations arrive.

Quick steps

  1. Beat the Pokémon League.
  2. Talk to every Gym Leader to register them.
  3. Keep battling and exploring to prompt calls.
  4. Check Match Call often and accept invitations.

Used well, Match Call becomes your rematch hub, turning finished routes and gyms into a steady circuit of meaningful battles.
