In the realm of online content, there’s a simple litmus test for shareability known as the dinner table test. Similar to an elevator pitch, it asks whether a picture or video is straightforward enough to describe in a casual dinner conversation.

For instance, think about that video where a cat freaks out after seeing a cucumber. It’s the kind of content that prompts you to say, “Hey, did you see that video where the cat goes crazy over a cucumber?”

Bringing up internet culture in real-life conversations can be hit or miss. We’ve all tried describing a hilarious video to friends and struggled because “you just have to see it” doesn’t always work.

Here’s a basic formula I’ve observed: a successful post usually fits into two blanks. For example, “Did you see that picture/video where [blank] does [blank]?” It’s straightforward and invites discussion without needing extensive backstory.

Adding a third blank often complicates things unnecessarily. When content starts requiring too much explanation, like “Did you see that video where [blank] does [blank], and because of that [blank] goes over to [blank] and…” — it tends to lose its shareability.

The key to shareable content lies in clarity and emotional context. A simple image or video can become viral with a descriptive caption that adds depth, like showing a healthy dog compared to its scrawny, street-living past.

Whether your goal is shareability or simply clarity in social media, framing your content in a way that’s easy to discuss and understand at a dinner table can make a significant difference. Visual effects and split-screen comparisons are effective techniques for providing context and enhancing emotional engagement, making your posts more likely to resonate and be shared organically.

Remember, while going viral shouldn’t be the primary goal, improving clarity and adding meaningful context to your posts can enhance their impact and reach online.
