Toasted Skin Syndrome (TSS), also known as erythema ab igne, is a skin condition caused by repeated exposure to low-grade heat. It appears as a reddish-brown, net-like discoloration of the skin and typically develops in areas exposed to prolonged heat sources without causing burns.

Causes of Toasted Skin Syndrome

TSS occurs when the skin is repeatedly exposed to infrared radiation. Some common sources include:

  • Laptops: Resting a warm laptop on your legs for long periods.
  • Heating Pads & Electric Blankets: Frequent or prolonged use.
  • Car Seat Heaters: Continuous exposure while driving.
  • Space Heaters & Fireplaces: Sitting too close for extended durations.

Symptoms to Watch For

  • Mottled, net-like redness
  • Mild burning or itching
  • Skin darkening over time
  • Rarely, skin thinning or ulceration

If heat exposure continues, the discoloration can become permanent and, in rare cases, may increase the risk of skin cancer.

How to Treat & Prevent It

  • Remove the Heat Source: The condition can fade over time if exposure stops.
  • Use a Barrier: Place a cloth between your skin and heat sources.
  • Apply Moisturizer: Helps soothe irritation and dryness.
  • Monitor for Changes: If discoloration persists or worsens, see a dermatologist.

While TSS is mostly harmless, chronic cases may need medical attention. Reducing heat exposure is the best way to prevent lasting damage.
